After my traditional New Year’s break, I’m back with my first article of 2019. The Basic Needs Association (TİDER), which pioneered the principled and systematic development of food banking in Türkiye to world standards, is organizing Türkiye’s first Food Banking Summit, following many firsts. Here are the details of this important initiative…

I’m starting this year’s first article with news of a wonderful event. Congratulations.

As TİDER, we continue to break new ground. We founded TİDER, the umbrella organization for food banking, in 2010 under the name Food Banking Association. You can find my article summarizing our work at TİDER at https://www.serhansuzer.com/tr/temel-ihtiyac-dernegi-tideri-anlamak.

Previously, in 2012, we brought together food banks across Türkiye for the first time at a dinner. In 2017, TİDER won the inaugural innovation award from the Global Foodbanking Network, headquartered in Chicago. This is a significant achievement for the Turkish civil society community. Moreover, we achieved this with our model that integrates vocational training with food banking. Our model is being emulated by many international NGOs. You can find the blog post I wrote about the innovation award we won at https://www.serhansuzer.com/tr/global-bir-stk-olma-yolundaki-tidere-buyuk-odul.

This time, we will be organizing a Food Banking Summit for the first time in the history of the Republic of Türkiye. This event, which will bring together all food banks in Türkiye on 21 February 2019, will be attended by all relevant public officials and all private sector representatives contributing to food banking. The summit will begin with opening remarks at 10 a.m. at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, and registration will begin at 9 a.m. I would like to share our goals with you at this summit:

  1. To connect food banks with the private sector to ensure they receive more regular donations.
  2. To ensure that food banks embrace our principles of impartiality, transparency, honesty, and sustainability.
  3. To ensure that the public is accurately informed and that relevant laws and regulations are adopted in line with international standards in the near future.
  4. To explain to private sector representatives contributing to the system that this work not only has moral implications but also legal benefits, such as a “reduction in tax base,” and to encourage them to donate more.
  5. To explain how food banking is done globally and to demonstrate different models, practices, and technologies to food banks in Türkiye.
  6. To honor and thank the food banking organizations, private sector representatives, and public officials who have contributed greatly to this work.
  7. To bring together those who contribute to aid efforts and share in everyone’s shared efforts.
