In my last article, I discussed destinations that impose certain restrictions and criteria on tourists in order to ensure sustainable tourism. In this article, I will discuss hair transplants in Turkey, a niche tourism sector that has gained great popularity worldwide in health tourism.

The hair transplant craze in Turkey has gained so much popularity worldwide that I can say it’s become one of the country’s largest industries. Turkey’s success and expertise in hair transplantation, which began internationally by word of mouth and later spread across all media channels, including social media, has become the subject of various jokes that make us all smile.

Here’s a joke about a tanned man returning from a hair transplant in Turkey who, despite being unrecognizable at passport control, was allowed through by declaring, “I’m from Turkey”: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C1xHE6rL_v5/?igsh=aGo0b2NxZDcwd2Rk

Hair transplants in Turkey are also becoming a subject of films abroad. Released in Spain in 2022 under the title “Por Los Pelos” (translated as “By the Hair”), the comedy film tells the story of three friends suffering from alopecia areata: Seba, Rayco, and Juanjo, who struggle with social pressure and travel to Turkey for hair transplants. I’m sharing the trailer for the film:

The “Turkish Hairlines” joke

I’d also like to remind you that not only hair transplants, but all types of hair transplants are performed. Here’s a TikTok post of a beard transplant procedure performed by an American who is essentially a beardless man (he doesn’t grow a beard): https://www.tiktok.com/@whoisfrankpierce/video/7264713257464712491

Since we’ve given these examples, let’s remember the image that started the now-clichéd “Turkish Hairlines” joke:

Joking aside, thanks to my cousin Hasan, a successful entrepreneur in the tourism-focused healthcare sector, I’ve learned a lot about this industry, especially the most prominent one: hair transplants. Before sharing this information, I’d like to share an interview he gave about his work and thank him for his contributions: https://www.digitaljournal.com/world/entrepreneur-hasan-suzer-amplifies-turkeys-growing-medical-tourism-sector-with-suzermed-2/article

I’m sharing information I received from Hasan about hair transplants in Turkey:

Tourism Revenue and Patient Numbers: Turkey is a major source of revenue in health tourism, particularly hair transplants. In 2022, approximately 1 million people came to Turkey for hair transplants and spent approximately $2 billion. This accounts for half of the country’s health tourism revenue (See: https://www.aa.com.tr/en/economy/around-1m-people-came-to-turkiye-for-hair-transplant-last-year/2785522 )

Positioning: Turkey is the most popular country in the world for hair transplants. This success is supported by Turkey’s high-quality service delivery and affordable pricing.

Goals and Developments: Turkey’s health tourism sector is targeting a revenue target of $20 billion. Furthermore, innovations such as robotic hair transplantation and stem cell-assisted hair transplantation have already begun in the sector (See: https://shorturl.at/lBFQ2 ).

European Market: 70% of patients coming to Turkey for hair transplants are from Europe (See: https://www.aa.com.tr/tr/saglik/turkiyeye-sac-ekimi-tedavisi-icin-gelenlerin-yuzde-70i-avrupadan/2476927 ). This demonstrates the trust and satisfaction of European patients in Turkey.

Inspection and Training: The Ministry of Health’s efforts to raise quality standards by tightening inspections and training programs for healthcare personnel are important steps to further enhance quality in this sector (See: https://www.aa.com.tr/en/health/turkey-top-choice-for-hair-transplants-in-europe/1361995 ).

Why is Turkey so popular?

Affordable Prices and High-Quality Medical Procedures: Turkey’s popularity stems from a combination of affordable prices and high-quality services. Similar quality services are offered at more attractive prices than in Western countries. Average prices in Turkey can often be less than half of those in these regions.

Hair transplant costs in Turkey generally range from $1,500 to $4,000. This figure varies depending on the complexity of the procedure, the technology used, and the prestige of the clinic.

Experienced Surgeons and Modern Infrastructure: Turkey is known for its experienced surgeons and modern medical infrastructure, contributing to its high success rates. In fact, Turkey boasts doctors, engineers, lawyers, and technical professionals from many different sectors who are highly successful in their respective fields. Interestingly, many of these individuals choose to live in Turkey, even though they would earn much more if they lived abroad. This is another factor that makes manufacturing in Turkey attractive, in any field. The presence of hair transplant specialists in Turkey and their global reach is a prime example. Thanks to these individuals with strong technical backgrounds, Turkey can manufacture all kinds of technologies and provide services requiring extensive know-how.

Personalized Treatment Plans: The personalized treatment plans offered to patients are a key factor in Turkey’s preference. Customized treatment plans both ensure better outcomes and increase customer satisfaction.

Tourist Attractions: Turkey’s tourist attractions provide patients with an additional advantage, enriching their experience. Turkey’s status as a tourism destination, and Istanbul’s status as one of the world’s leading tourism destinations, is a key factor that supports and enhances the country’s health tourism sector. High-Quality Hospitality: Customer satisfaction, reinforced by high-level service such as airport pickups with luxury vehicles and special tourism packages, has boosted Turkey’s reputation. Many hair transplant packages include additional services such as accommodation, airport transfers, and sometimes sightseeing tours in addition to the procedure. This provides patients with comprehensive experience and makes the treatment process more comfortable.

Turkish Airlines’ Support: Aside from the jokes about changing its name from Turkish Airlines to “Turkish Hairlines,” Turkish Airlines is known to support the Turkish healthcare sector. If you live abroad and want to receive healthcare in Turkey, Turkish Airlines covers a portion of your tickets: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C4L3PF6Nyqc/?igsh=aWZ1azF2ZXh2dzNp

Some of the reasons for choosing Turkey, mentioned above, are being shared on various social media platforms. Here’s a nice post about Turkey being the world’s hair transplant capital: Welcome to the Country of Hair. Yes – people come here from all over the world…just to get new HAIR! But why? We went all the way… | Instagram

To make success sustainable…

This information highlights Turkey’s global leadership in hair transplantation and the sector’s contributions to the country’s economy. Advanced hair transplantation techniques, affordable prices, and high patient satisfaction are the primary reasons why Turkey is preferred in this field. In short, Turkey has achieved global success by providing high-quality services at affordable costs and achieving an excellent price-quality balance. Now, let’s discuss how we can make this success sustainable… I share my thoughts:

1) The quality of doctors and healthcare personnel: The most crucial aspect of this is that doctors and healthcare personnel are of a character that adheres to high quality and adheres to uncompromising standards. The government also has a role to play in this:

a) Standards should be established and disseminated across the entire sector,

b) Sanctions should be ensured to be understood by everyone,

c) Inspections within the sector should be intensified,

d) Transparency should be encouraged in the sector through relevant regulations.

e) It is necessary to emphasize the ethical aspect of the training of doctors and healthcare personnel, that is, the importance of quality and hygiene should be strictly adhered to, and the importance of standards should be emphasized.

2) Increasing the number of doctors and healthcare personnel: Looking at the figures and if the sector will grow continuously for the next 10-15 years, both the public and private sectors need to make efforts to increase the number of doctors and healthcare personnel. However, this cannot be achieved by sloppy training to keep up with this pace, but rather by providing good, high-quality education. In other words, instead of accelerating training and providing sloppy training, the number of trainers should be increased, creating a multiplier effect on the number of trainees.

3) Investing in technology: While increasing the number of healthcare personnel and doctors, we cannot ignore technology. We must pioneer the development of new technologies in this area. Budgets should be allocated for areas such as robotic hair transplantation and the use of artificial intelligence and stem cells in hair transplantation, bringing together specialist doctors and software developers to develop these technologies. Otherwise, other countries making progress in this field may minimize staffing by using robots, thus taking away our cost advantage.

4) Transparency in the sector: The entire sector’s records can be digitalized, making the process of choosing a clinic easier. It is important for patients to inquire about detailed treatment plans, check the official licenses of clinics, and research the experience of their surgeons. To facilitate this research, everything must be digitalized.

5) Encouraging other areas of health tourism beyond hair transplantation: The sector can be expanded by promoting other aesthetic fields in addition to hair transplantation. Furthermore, special programs can be created for those seeking treatment in Turkey, which boasts world-class physicians specializing in areas such as gastroenterology, internal medicine, and orthopedics, to encourage the continued growth of the healthcare sector. This includes the high-potential fields of dentistry and dental aesthetics. He faked an injury to protect his hair.

Throughout history, people have resorted to various methods to look beautiful and impress others. Beyond women prioritizing cosmetic surgery, I can say that men today also prioritize their appearance and are highly motivated to undergo hair transplants, even if it means suffering. This is so common that there are even professional footballers who deliberately avoid heading the ball for extended periods after hair transplants and fake an injury to do so. Beşiktaş’s Aboubakar is a prime example: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C3f1xbNu7MS/?igsh=MWk1bDJxaXh4MGk0bA==

Turkey has also carved out a significant niche in this field and has become a global favorite (See: https://www.milliyet.com.tr/pazar/turkiye-sac-ekiminde-dunyanin-gozdesi-7006157 ). The important thing now is to make this success sustainable, to replicate and build upon the success achieved in hair transplantation in other branches of the healthcare sector.
