I gladly accepted the interview request from the consulate. The production team, led by Cansu Hanım from Organization Workshop, arrived, and the filming took place. The result is a delightful video:
Later, last Saturday, I visited the ‘Canadian Education Week’ event. Held at the Wyndham Grand Hotel in Levent, this event brought together representatives from Canadian universities, colleges, and language schools with Turkish students interested in studying there. There was significant interest in the event. Here are some photos taken there:

The large turnout was a clear indication of the growing interest in Canadian universities. While there, I also happened to meet the esteemed Ulric Shannon, Canada’s Consul General in Montreal. We took a souvenir photo together at the entrance, and the following image emerged:

A few weeks ago, Mehmet Emin, in our McGill University alumni WhatsApp group, reported that there were 800 applications to McGill University this year, and Nuran Çakmakçı’s article below, entitled USA out, Canada and Europe in for young people, which cemented my impression that “the popularity of Canadian universities is on the rise.”

I gradually started thinking about this. During my time at university, which had 30,000 students, only 10 Turkish undergraduate students were enrolled, I’d like to share the reasons why there are currently 800 applicants with my own university alone, and why Canadian universities are in significant demand. Here are my observations on this matter:
The quality of education is at least on par with US universities.
There are well-established institutions that have proven themselves in this regard. In fact, the quality of education at many American universities is far below the established standard in Canada. In my opinion, the quality of the best educational institutions in both countries is on par. How do I know this? From the graduates. When I compare graduates of American universities to graduates of Canadian universities, I can say there’s no difference; in fact, the level of competence of Canadian university graduates is slightly above the general average. Many people have noticed this.
Graduates’ Achievement in Higher Positions
Beyond general quality, I can also say that graduates of Canadian universities have proven themselves in many areas in terms of post-grad career success. Of course, in every school, there are successful and unsuccessful individuals, useful and unhelpful individuals. You can’t draw a clear line between these two. However, when you look at the overall average, I can say that graduates from Canadian universities have higher success rates than those from other countries.
The rise of successful figures like Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whose popularity has increased in recent years, has also increased the demand for Canadian universities. I’m glad I contributed towards this.
Affordable Costs
Those who study in the US have always paid more than those who study in Canada. The costs of Canadian universities are reasonable. Furthermore, if you become a Canadian citizen or obtain a residency permit, you won’t pay anything beyond a very low tuition fee at public universities.
Liberal and Relaxed Environment
Young people don’t like to be pressured. They want a free and comfortable environment. Canadians generally have a liberal approach. Canadian universities don’t pressure students and assume that individuals of that age understand their responsibilities. They give them freedom, but their success criteria are clear. If this freedom extends to skipping classes, you won’t succeed. While Canadian universities provide a comfortable environment, they don’t tolerate students abusing this environment; you won’t graduate that way. Therefore, there’s a good balance.
One-Year Work Permit After Graduation
Graduates automatically receive a one-year work permit. If they find and maintain a good job, this process leads to citizenship. Therefore, studying in such a country is a good start in securing your future.
Citizenship
Many people seek citizenship in this beautiful country, where education and healthcare are free. This number has rapidly increased over the years. Canada, the world’s second-largest country by land area, has a population approximately one-tenth that of the United States. Of course, due to the cold weather, the general population lives close to the border. Nevertheless, despite increasingly stringent immigration laws, demand for Canadian citizenship is increasing. Families of those who went to study in Canada are also considering this option and sending their children to Canada, as families may also want to immigrate to the country.
Preferred by English- and French-speaking high school graduates
English and French-speaking schools are predominantly taught as foreign languages in Türkiye. Canada, whose two official languages are English and French, also sees a high demand for applications from high schools offering these languages. There’s particularly strong interest from Türkiye in high schools offering French instruction, particularly in Quebec, Canada’s French-origin province, and even in Montreal, where I studied.
The Beauty of Cities
Speaking of Montreal, I can’t help but emphasize how delightful Canadian cities are. Montreal has one of the highest number of restaurants and entertainment venues relative to its population. Its culture is a true blend of European and American culture, and the city boasts people from all ethnic backgrounds. As I visited the campuses of every university I was interested in, I can say that Montreal was my first love. Although it was the only Canadian university I applied to, McGill University was by far my favorite university. This wish came true, and I’m so glad I studied in such a delightful city, making wonderful friends. You can find my article detailing my involvement with McGill University at http://www.serhansuzer.com/tr/ufuk-acan-bir-deneyim-mcgill-yillarim.
Successful promotional activities in recent years
Canadians have begun organizing many important events, such as ‘Canadian Education Week,’ as they did last weekend. Furthermore, the number of institutions referring students to Canadian universities has begun to increase. As a result of all this, demand for Canadian universities has become more accessible, and this is naturally increasing.
If you consider the advantages listed above and wish your child to study in Canada, you can learn more at http://www.educanadaTürkiye.com. You can also direct any questions you have to the relevant institutions through this website.
I wish success to my students considering studying there. Enjoy…
